The Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) team is seeking an Associate CAD / Tooling Design Engineer located in -Sylmar, CA.If you are an early career engineer with strong CAD skills and experience in product/tooling design looking for a place where you can apply both your CAD skills and your creativity to address design and manufacturability issues in a fast paced Aerospace engineering and manufacturing environment, keep reading. -As a small wholly-owned subsidiary of The Boeing Company, Spectrolab offers the daily variety of work, direct interaction with manufacturing, customers, and suppliers, and family feel of a small company, while offering the stability and growth potential of a recognized global industrial champion. -As a member of our CAD and Tooling design team, you will have the opportunity to work on projects covering the entire range of Spectrolab's products: everything from large and small solar panels and arrays for a variety of space applications to photolithography tooling used to fabricate the world's most efficient space solar cells to airborne searchlight, gimbal systems and ground-based high-intensity illuminated test systems. - You will also have the opportunity to directly contribute to development programs and to help shape our next-generation improvements in product, process and tooling design.Primary Responsibilities:

  • Design solar panels, solar panel sub-assemblies and components, and solar wing harnessing in AutoCAD / Inventor Pro Suite. - Also design and update searchlight/gimbal systems and high intensity illumination products for solar cell and solar panel test in AutoCAD / Inventor Pro Suite. -
  • Generate piece part, sub-assembly, component and tooling procurement drawings and assembly drawings and models using AutoCAD/Inventor Pro Suite.
  • Assess customer ICDs for manufacturability and provide feedback/improvement suggestions to enhance compliance and/or manufacturability. -
  • Work with Panel Product Engineers to translate customer schematics and specifications into achievable manufacturing plans, inclusive of part procurement drawings, sub-assembly drawings, and manufacturing efficient panel layouts and detailed manufacturing drawings, inclusive of Bill of Materials (BOMs), detail views, wiring lists, schematics, and notes. -
  • Work with Illuminations Systems Product Engineers to generate and update part and assembly documentation needed for procurement, manufacturing and assembly, including generation of 3D models and model management in VAULT. -
  • Work with Product and Process Engineers to identify and define the production flow and manufacturing support tooling necessary to safely and efficiently build and test the hardware in conformance with customer requirements. -
  • Participate in design trades as needed to support evaluations for proposals and internally funded improvement projects.
  • Participate in round-table drawing reviews and CAD-check of drawings and tooling designs generated by others. -
  • Learn to generate soft tooling files from AutoCAD model and to generate and check photo-mask drawings. -
  • Adapt to meet changing priorities in support of manufacturing, engineering, and marketing needs. -
  • Communicate effectively with a diverse group of both internal and external customers and colleagues. - - - - - -The ideal candidate will also be a motivated self-starter with experience and skills to take on additional responsibilities, such as:
    • Working within the CAD/Tooling team to identify and evaluate opportunities to simplify the drawing generation/review/management process by using the latest tools and techniques from Autodesk.
    • Using VBA programming to simplify generation of documents associated with CAD models (such as BOMs, wire lists, tools to extract analysis inputs).
    • Generating and updating tooling concepts, models, and procurement and assembly drawings using AutoCAD/Inventor Pro Suite.
    • Working with internal, customer, and supplier engineering teams to verify model tolerances and dimensional call-outs on drawings to assure manufacturability for internally built assemblies and to help resolve procurement, production, and cost of quality issues for both Space Photovoltaic and Illuminations Product lines.
    • Advancing ideas for streamlining both design/documentation and manufacturing processes by applying DFMAT principles to all generated and reviewed deliverable hardware and manufacturing/support tool designs. - - -
    • Participating in supplier capability assessments and procured part and tooling validations
    • Participating in evaluation of automated solutions and the necessary support tooling and software to implement in production -
    • Working with internal and customer partners to determine factors of safety and logistical support for assembly/ground support tooling.
    • Creating visual process instructions, training and marketing materials using a combination of CAD, graphic illustration, programming, and video editing.
    • Using LabView, Python, C/C+/C++ , SQL, and/or other programming skills, in combination with your CAD and Production support experience, to improve current production products and processes and to help define the automated equipment and support tooling needed for next generation products and processes.This position is expected to be 100% onsite. - The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a "US Person" as defined by 22 C.F.R. - - 120.15 is required.       • CAD design / GD&T certification or Associates Degree + 5 or more years' relevant experience or equivalent (e.g. Bachelor's degree and 2+ years' relevant experience) in a production support or direct to manufacture design environment.
      • 2+ years' experience using 2D AutoCAD and 3D Inventor, including model management in VAULT or similar PDM system (block parts, detail views, etc)
      • 2+ years' experience reading and generating electrical schematics
      • 2+ years' experience in design and tooling support for a manufacturing environment; coordinating as needed with manufacturing technicians and other engineers to implement design and manufacturability improvements
      • 1+ years' experience compiling and presenting technical data and concepts to a diverse audience
      • Must be flexible, able to support evening and weekend work on an as needed basis, and self-motivated. -
      • Must be adept at working in a fast paced environment to complete scheduled milestones as planned. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -Preferred Experience Desired:
        • 2+ years' experience utilizing GD&T principles for evaluating manufacturing tolerances and dimensional stack-ups
        • 2+ years hands-on experience with drills, lathes, CNC, stamping, or other machine shop equipment
        • 1+ years' experience with rapid prototyping via 3D print, WEDM, or other quick evaluation manufacturing technologies
        • 1+ years' experience in design and implementation of Automated Systems (inclusive of tooling and programming considerations)
        • 1+ years' working with engineers to evaluate material and component selection for product & tooling designs
        • Knowledge of VBA, video editing, illustrations / graphic design and translating between AutoCAD/Inventor and other CAD systems (such as NX or Catia). -
        • Experience in DFMAT, IAW, 3P, or other LEAN manufacturability improvement activities
        • Experience with Printed Circuit Board (PCB)/Printed Wiring Board (PWB)/Flex Circuits or other electronics packaging and wiring design
        • Familiarity with the basic physics of solar cells, photolithographic processes, Aerospace materials and assembly techniques, and a background in mechanical engineering, industrial design and/or material science. - - - - - - - - - - -
